The precious metals gold, silver, and platinum are among the most valuable commodities worldwide, with their value largely determined by their relative scarcity, and their definition as being precious relating to both their rarity and price. Aside from their beauty, precious metals all boast unique physical properties that make them invaluable for a variety of applications.
Of the precious metals, silver is the most voluminously produced, with global production amounting to an estimated 25,000 metric tons in 2024, while gold production reached an estimated 330 metric tons and platinum production reached an estimated 170 metric tons. Precious metal reserves follow similarly, with global silver reserves (640,000 metric tons) far outweighing platinum group metal (PGM) reserves, having amounted to 81,000 metric tons, and gold reserves, which amounted to 64,000 metric tons as of 2024.
