Coffee shops and cafés in the U.S. - statistics & facts
The United States has its own unique coffee culture. Often associated more with speed and quantity, it has become the perfect environment for quick service coffee shop and café chains to thrive. In 2025, the market value of the coffee shop industry in the United States exceeded 58 billion U.S. dollars, showing growth of over 10 billion U.S. dollars compared to pre-pandemic levels. Meanwhile, the number of establishments in this market increased by roughly six percent over the previous year, with over 45,000 coffee shops in the United States in 2025.
What is the biggest U.S. coffee shop chain?
While the U.S. coffee shop market is extremely competitive, with companies like Dunkin', Tim Hortons, and Dutch Bros Coffee vying with many independent stores, one brand surpasses the rest by a large margin, not only in the U.S., but also globally: Starbucks. In 2025, Starbucks’ revenue reached an all-time high, at 37 billion U.S. dollars, and the company ranked as the second-most valuable quick service restaurant brand globally that year. When looking at the number of Starbucks stores in the U.S., the Seattle-based chain had nearly 17,000 establishments across the country in 2024, more than the combined number of Dunkin’ and Dutch Bros Coffee stores. This figure made it the leading coffee shop chain in the United States by number of units.
Coffee shops’ key role in the specialty coffee segment
Based on a survey on the most popular locations for hot drink consumption in the United States, almost half of U.S. consumers surveyed said they visited coffee shops in 2025. Such establishments are particularly popular among specialty coffee drinkers, with twice as many such consumers as traditional coffee drinkers having visited a coffee shop, café, or donut shop to consume coffee in 2025. Looking at specialty coffee consumption in the United States by age group, respondents aged 25 to 39 were the most likely to have consumed such beverages that year.
While the United States may be a relative newcomer to the coffee world compared to the well-established café market in France and Italy’s renowned espresso culture, it has certainly made an impact on the global stage. Driven by high coffee consumption in the United States and big-name brands, the coffee shop market in the U.S. looks to remain piping hot.
