The rise of populism in Europe has not gone unnoticed. In many countries, both right- and left-wing populist parties have gained ground in recent years, challenging the traditional partnership between Christian democrats and Social democrats that had long governed the continent. Leaning on an anti-establishment message, populist parties targeted political elites and economic institutions, accusing them of being corrupt and out of touch with people’s needs.
