Cement industry emissions worldwide - Statistics & Facts
Cement is one of the most used substances in the world and has been a necessity for global development for centuries. However, it comes with considerable environmental costs. In 2023, the global cement industry emitted 2.4 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e), or six percent of total global emissions. If it were a country, it would be the world’s fourth-biggest emitter of greenhouse gases. With demand growing, cement’s substantial carbon footprint is set to soar further. The industry must now find a way to cut emissions from this hard-to-abate sector while also catering to the world’s increasing urbanization and construction needs.
