The influence of humans on the fate of planet Earth has reached unprecedented heights today. The Holocene era – i.e., the present as we know it – has witnessed significant changes in the biophysical process caused by human activity, hence it is also aptly termed the “Anthropocene”.
The Anthropocene marks global impacts of greater magnitude than previous epoch transitions, and more often than not, they are happening simultaneously. Especially implications from changes happening during the mid-20th century are accumulating. The processes and systems that regulate the stability and resilience of various Earth systems that guarantee our survival are at stake now – first and foremost a noticeable change in climate.
