Although the coffee plant was originally discovered in Ethiopia many centuries ago, modern world coffee production centers in Latin America. The region accounts for nearly half of the world’s coffee output, followed by Asia and Oceania. In particular, Brazil’s economy and culture are strongly influenced by coffee. Brazil is the world's leading producer of the bean by a large margin; second-placed Vietnam produces less than half the volume of Brazil. In terms of coffee harvest area, Brazil is the leading country, with its coffee plantations mostly concentrated in the southeastern region known as the "coffee belt", which includes the states of Minas Gerais, EspÃrito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo.
