China is by far the largest installer of wind power in the world, more than tripling the second-ranked United States. As of the end of 2025, China had cumulatively installed over 691 gigawatts of wind energy, in comparison to 160 gigawatts of wind energy installed in the United States. Worldwide, the cumulative capacity of wind energy reached more than 1.3 terawatt in 2025. 

Wind energy production worldwide

Wind energy generates electricity by using moving air to spin turbine blades connected to a generator. The amount of power depends on turbine size and wind speed, and advances in technology have made turbines larger and more efficient.

Offshore wind

Offshore wind farms are built in bodies of water, where winds are stronger and more consistent, allowing for higher and more reliable energy production. However, they are more expensive to build and maintain than onshore wind farms.
