The United States is the largest natural gas producer in the world. In the late 2000s, advances in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing allowed the U.S. to explore previously inaccessible shale gas and tight oil plays. The extraction of which has made the U.S. the world鈥檚 leading producer of natural gas. Natural gas is one of the most in-demand primary fuels today, not only in the U.S., but around the world, and largely used as a heating fuel, for electricity generation and the manufacturing of chemicals.
