In 2018, approximately 5.13 quadrillion British thermal units of energy derived from biomass were consumed in the United States. U.S. biomass energy production is expected to grow to 5.54 quadrillion British thermal units in 2050. When retail gasoline prices have peaked, biofuels have increasingly gained importance as a transport fuel. In 2018, U.S. biofuel production grew to about 38.1 million metric tons of oil equivalent, up from about three million metric tons in 2000. The global production of biofuels reached just about 95.4 million metric tons of oil equivalent in 2018, where the U.S. continues to lead biofuel production.
