Banking industry in Ghana - statistics & facts
The concept of banking in Ghana has gained gradual popularity over the years. There has been tremendous growth in bank account ownership in the country since 2013, reflecting the projected 78 percent penetration rate by 2028. In fact, as of 2022, close to half of Ghana's population had an account at a financial institution. This way, account holders can benefit from the products and services provided by these institutions, including online banking and debit or credit card ownership. In 2024, the nation's credit and debit card penetration was forecast at around 0.6 percent and 17.8 percent, respectively. Indeed, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic affected banking institutions in Ghana such that over 30 percent of them considered that they would return to 'business as usual' two years after the crisis.
