While non-performing loans (NPL) are defined as such when they are 90 days past due, non-performing exposure (NPE) refers to exposure to borrowers that are unlikely to pay their obligations or that have payments 90 days past their due.
Figures for individual countries includes the data of the subsidiaries of corporations domiciled in another country.

In March 2025, Poland was the EU country with the highest ratio of non-performing loans (NLPs) to total gross loans, at nearly **** percent. During the same period, the ratio of non-performing loans in Sweden amounted to just **** percent. Non-performing loans are those that are in default, or are close to being in default. Many standard contract terms specify that loans become non-performing after being in default for 90 days, but this can vary.
