While non-performing loans (NPL) only refer to loans and advances that are unlikely to pay their obligations or that have payments 90 days past their due, non-performing exposure (NPE) also includes the value of debt securities that are non-performing.
Figures for individual countries includes the data of the subsidiaries of corporations domiciled in another country.

Non-performing exposure ratio in Europe 2025, by country
As of March 2025, Poland was one of the countries in Europe with the largest ratio of non-performing exposures (NPE) to total gross loans at **** percent. On the other side of the spectrum, Swedish banks had an exposure to non-performing loans of just **** percent. Loans are considered non-performing when they are in default or close to being in default. Many standard contract terms specify that exposures become non-performing after being in default for 90 days, but this can vary.
