Includes Scope 1, 2 (market-based), and 3 emissions.
Supplementary notes
Google's fiscal year runs from January 1, through December 31 of each year.
*Google's Ambition-based emissions excludes pollution from certain Scope 3 categories that it considers out of its control or 鈥減eripheral鈥 to its core operations. These include Category 1: Purchased goods and services exclusions and Category 2: Capital goods exclusions.
Most environmental data covers Alphabet Inc. and its subsidiaries. All reported data is global and annual unless otherwise specified.
Google鈥檚 total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions increased by ****percent year-on-year in 2024, to million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO鈧俥). That year, Google鈥檚 carbon intensity was approximately tCO鈧俥 per unit of revenue.
Google鈥檚 emissions surge
In 2024, Google鈥檚 "ambition-based" GHG emissions increased ** percent relative to 2019, the base year for the tech giant鈥檚 goal of reaching net zero. The main reason for these rising emissions has been soaring energy demands at Google鈥檚 data centers, which are primarily being driven by the company鈥檚 expanding artificial intelligence (AI) services. AI requires considerable amounts of energy for computation and data storage.
Google鈥檚 climate targets at risk
Google has set the target of reaching net zero emissions across all its operations and value chain by 2030. This includes slashing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by ** percent from the 2019 base year. But with the company鈥檚 emissions currently rising and energy demand from its AI services set to grow further, these targets are being put at risk. One way in which Google is aiming to address its rising emissions is to move toward purchasing high-quality carbon removal credits.
