The data from subsidiaries are taken into account for both the country where that organization is based, and for the country where the subsidiary is active.
Each of the Benelux countries had a lower non-performing loan (NPL) ratio than the average for the European Economic Area in 2023. The NPL ratio measures the share of loans by a bank which have been past due for a certain period. In the EU, the NPL ratio decreased significantly between 2016 and 2022. The Netherlands and Belgium followed this trend to a lower extent, as their ratios were lower than for the EU. A large part of the private debt in the Netherlands is comprised of mortgages. During the past decade, the total mortgage debt from households in the Netherlands have increased at a fast pace.
