Citation formats

In 2020, Belgium had a share of approximately 5.5 percent in the total credit transfers issued by resident PSPs in the EU. This was a slight decline compared to the previous year. Like in other European countries, credit and debit cards are a popular form of digital payment methods for either physical purchases in brick-and-mortar-stores or for online purchases.

In 2017, Luxembourg had approximately 240 card payments per capita compared to 166 in Belgium and 250 in the Netherlands. Consumers from the Benelux are familiar with the use of credit cards. Domestic uses, however, appear to be few due to the presence of other popular payment services, with credit cards generally being used for specific situations such as online shopping or foreign travels.
