This statistic shows the value of transactions in direct debits in Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands from 2010 to 2019 (in billion euros). In 2019 the total value of direct debits in Belgium was approximately 140 billion euros. Like in other European countries, credit and debit cards are a popular form of digital payment methods for either physical purchases in brick-and-mortar-stores or for online purchases.
In 2017, Luxembourg had approximately 240 card payments per capita compared to 166 in Belgium and 250 in the Netherlands. Consumers from the Benelux are familiar with the use of credit cards. Domestic uses, however, appear to be few due to the presence of other popular payment services, with credit cards generally being used for specific situations such as online shopping or foreign travels.
