What is an electric utility?

Electric utilities are companies involved in the provision of electricity to customers. An electric utility company can be involved in one or more of the steps included in this process, namely generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity. Recent years have seen utility companies across the globe increasing their utilization of renewable energy sources. The largest renewable energy companies worldwide are located in the United States and Europe. 

European utilities leading the pack

Six out of the top 10 leading electric utilities based on sales are located in Europe. E.ON, headquartered in Germany, had annual sales of approximately billion U.S. dollars as of June 17, 2025. The British branch of E.ON is a member of the Big Six in the UK.
