Electricity production and consumption in Italy - statistics & facts
With a population of almost 60 million people, Italy is one of the leading European countries in terms of electricity production and consumption. In 2024, the net electricity production in Italy amounted to 263 terawatt-hours, of which over 50 percent was generated from fossil sources. Natural gas was historically the leading single source of electricity in the country, while hydropower and solar photovoltaic energy dominated the renewable power sector, with a net electricity production of 52 and 36 terawatt-hours in 2024, respectively.
