In fiscal year 2024, the operating revenue of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc., also known as TEPCO, amounted to around *** trillion Japanese yen. The figure decreased slightly compared to approximately *** trillion Japanese yen in the previous year. TEPCO is one of Japan's largest electric power companies based on total assets. It supplies the Kanto region, including the Tokyo area as well as Yamanashi Prefecture and the eastern portion of Shizuoka Prefecture.
Aftermath of the Fukushima Disaster
TEPCO is internationally known for the nuclear disaster at its Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Fukushima Prefecture which was triggered by the Tohoku Earthquake and the following tsunami in 2011. The disaster was categorized as a level event by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the only other disaster to meet this classification after Chornobyl. The share of Japanese people who supported the use of nuclear energy dropped significantly in the years after the disaster. However, the Japanese government supported TEPCO financially to ensure the power supply in the Tokyo area.
Moving forward: establishing renewable energy sources
In more recent years, TEPCO has been introducing power generation facilities that use renewable energy sources. The company is operating solar power stations and aims to increase its use of wind power as well. Currently, its main energy sources are hydropower, thermal power, and renewable energy. Nevertheless, the overall electricity sales volume of TEPCO kept decreasing throughout the past decade.
