As of January 2023, HyDeal Ambition is the largest announced green hydrogen project worldwide in terms of electrolyzer capacity. The consortium of energy and construction firms behind this colossal project includes the natural gas distributor Enagás, ArcelorMittal, and Vinci Construction among its members.
Why is it so important?
Green hydrogen projects can be an important way to contribute to the decarbonization of the planet, and despite good intentions and efforts made over the last decade, the levels of carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere remain concerning. However, there are two main challenges to face: the still limited installed electrolysis capacity and the high production costs compared to fossil fuels.
What is hydrogen and what is it used for?
The use of hydrogen as an energy source is not new. It is already being used industrially and is expected to play a significant role in electricity production for domestic use, as it is the most abundant element on the planet. However, it is not found freely in nature but mainly bonded to oxygen in liquid (Hâ‚‚O) or gaseous form, so it can only be used as fuel after undergoing a series of transformations. Depending on the fuel and manufacturing process, the resulting product can be classified as gray, blue, or green hydrogen.
