Supplementary notes
The source illustrates its methodology as follows: first, for each individual product or product group it was determined whether the protein content was animal- or plant-based. Secondly, based on the kilograms sold in a year of a given product and on the product's protein content, it was possible to determine how many kilograms of protein were sold in the same year.

During the period under consideration in Dutch supermarket retail, consumers increased their purchase of food products whose protein content was plant-based. While in 2023 just over ** percent of protein sales in supermarkets came from plant-based food products, by 2024 that figure had increased to close to ** percent.
