The 2025 Gabonese presidential election marked a major milestone in the country's history, as it was the first election to be held since a military coup ousted Ali Bongo in 2023. Brice Oligui Nguema won the 2025 presidential election in a landslide, with over ** percent of the vote, in an election with over ** percent turnout (the highest in over 30 years).

Background

Brice Oligui Nguema, a cousin of Ali Bongo, was the Brigadier General who led the coup that ended the Bongo family's *** decades in charge of Gabon. After taking control, Nguema and the interim government introduced many constitutional reforms, including term limits for presidents and parliamentary restructuring.

Challenges

Due to its lucrative resource industries, particularly oil, as well as gold, manganese, and timber, Gabon has the highest GDP per capita in mainland Africa. However, most of this wealth was consolidated by a small number of people during the Bongo reign, with much of the population living in poverty. With his election victory, Nguema has pledged to open Gabon's economy to further international cooperation and opportunities, but it remains to be seen how much of the economic and political power will be divested from the structures and systems that controlled Gabon for 55 years.
