Greenhouse gas emissions from the agri-food system were estimated at around ** billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCOâ‚‚e) in 2021. Almost half of the systems emissions came from sources within the farmgate, with enteric fermentation the biggest polluter in this subcategory. However, the largest overall source of agri-food system emissions is net forest conversion, i.e., the clearing of natural forests to use the land for purposes such as growing crops or creating pasture for cattle.
