The harvested area for soybeans worldwide has increased substantially since the 1960s. In 1961 the area from which soybeans was gathered was million hectares but by 2024 the area had increased to over million hectares. This has coincided with the rise in soybean production for livestock feed. The area harvested for other crops such as oil palm fruit, sugar cane, and coffee have also increased considerably to meet growing demand. This has had an adverse impact on the environment, especially in terms of deforestation in tropical regions.
