Agriculture sector GHG emissions worldwide 1990-2023, by select country
China is the world's largest source of agricultural greenhouse gases (GHG), emitting *** million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCOâ‚‚e) in 2023. This was an overall decrease of roughly **** percent, relative to 1990 levels. By comparison, agricultural GHG emissions in Brazil surged by roughly ** percent during this period. India has also seen its agriculture emissions rise dramatically since 1990.Â
Methane is the primary GHG emitted by agricultural processes such as enteric fermentation. Methane is a potent gas, with a global warming potential far greater than carbon dioxide.
