Physicians were selected at random from internet-based physician office listings such as the online Yellow Pages or Healthgrades, or through search engines such as Google. In each call, research associates asked to be told the first available time for a new patient appointment. If asked, and depending on the specialty at issue, they indicated a hypothetical reason for the appointment, as follows: Orthopedic Surgery: Injury or pain in the knee (urgent care)

In 2025, it took on average 12 days to get an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon in the United States. This was according to a survey of physician offices in 15 major U.S. metropolitan areas. The wait time for an orthopedic surgery has increased from 11.4 days in 2017, but decreased compared to the year 2022.
