Citation formats

During the Troubles, over half of those killed in the conflict (approximately 52 percent of all 3,532 victims) were civilians, while almost one third were British security forces, such as the British Army, the RUC (the Royal Ulster Constabulary, Northern Ireland's former police force), or prison officers. Republican and loyalist paramilitary groups made up just 11 and five percent of all deaths respectively, despite being responsible for over 3,000 deaths combined - however, it should be noted that many paramilitary members' deaths would have been classified as civilian deaths due to the nature of the conflict.
