In 2020, the feedstock subsector of the chemical industry was the leading consumer of natural gas in the European Union, with a consumption of around *** terawatt hours. Meanwhile, the food sector was found to have the greatest consumption reduction capability. By 2027, this industry sector could see natural gas use decrease more than three-fold when taking into account development potential of current alternative fuel pilot projects.
