Nearly a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions were covered by emissions trading systems (ETS) as of April 1, 2026. The share of emissions covered by an ETS increased from roughly **** percent to almost **** percent between 2005 and 2020. Coverage sharply increased in 2021 due to China's national ETS coming into force.
