Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions covered by carbon taxes vary greatly worldwide. As of April 2026, an estimated 41 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in France were covered by a carbon tax, while more than 80 percent of South Africa's emissions were covered by a carbon tax. Carbon taxes cover around four percent of global GHG emissions.
