Verified aviation emissions covered by the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) totaled 54 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCOâ‚‚e) in 2023. From 2013 to 2019, EU ETS aviation emissions increased by 27 percent to 68 MtCOâ‚‚e. However, the following year saw emissions from the aviation industry plummet 63 percent due to COVID-19 -related travel restrictions. Though emissions have rebounded since then, they have remained below pre-pandemic levels.Â
