Fuel combustion was the biggest contributor to emissions covered by the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) in 2024, having produced *** million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCOâ‚‚e). Emissions from the combustion of fuels, which primarily come from the power sector, have decreased by more than ** percent since the EU ETS was launched in 2005. In regard to industrial activities, the biggest GHG polluter was the cement and lime sector, having emitted just over 100 MtCOâ‚‚e in 2024.
Most activity sectors covered by the EU ETS have observed overall emissions reductions since 2005, except for the production of chemicals and other metals (including aluminum).
