According to a survey conducted in 2021 in Canada and the United States, 64 percent of Canadian respondents and 59 percent of U.S. respondents believed that whistleblower Frances Haugen's claims about Facebook were true. However, one in ten respondents in Canada did not believe Haugen’s allegations, as well as 17 percent of those in the U.S.
Haugen, who was a product manager at Facebook, spoke out about the company’s failures in handling misinformation and teens' mental health, as well as the spread of hate speech, among other issues. In late 2021, Facebook rebranded and renamed to Meta Platforms, with Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp being known as the company’s Family of Apps.
