Gabriel Boric Font, a lawyer and former student leader, was the most voted candidate in the second round of the Chilean general presidential elections on December 19, 2021. As of April 21, when 99.9 percent of votes had been tallied, Boric received around 55.9 percent of valid votes cast. In the first round of the elections, which took place in November 2021, he obtained 25.83 percent of the votes, while the far-right candidate José Antonio Kast won the round with 27.91 percent of votes. Since no candidate obtained the absolute majority, Chilean voters were summoned to a runoff elections a month later.
Boric has become not only the youngest president of the Latin American country, but also the most voted candidate in the history of the Chilean democracy. He was the candidate of the Frente Amplio (Broad Front), a coalition founded in 2017 composed of various left parties and movements.
