According to a study conducted in Nigeria, the most common purpose of bribe payments in the country is to speed up procedures carried out by public officials. Other common reasons why bribes were paid to Nigerian public officials include avoiding the payment of a fine, avoiding the cancelation of public utilities, or maintaining good relationship.
