In Italy, mobile users drastically reduced their visits to grocery stores and pharmacies during the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in 2020. Data gathered by Google applications using location trackers showed that between January and March 2020, Italian users reduced their visits by 85 percent. The percentage change was compared to the baseline represented by the average number visits between January and February 2020. The highest percentage value was reported in the northern region of Veneto (less 95 percent), significantly affected by the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
During the following months, mobility increased again, but at different paces. Aosta Valley reported the biggest growth, with 20 percent, while other regions still marked a negative trend. In July, visits to grocery stores and pharmacies were still 21 percent less than reported in January 2020.
