An emerging unicorn company is a privately owned startup that has a current valuation between 500 million and one billion U.S. dollars. Once a company reaches a valuation of one billion U.S. dollars or higher, it becomes a unicorn.
As of March 2026, the software industry led the global landscape of emerging unicorns, with *** companies expected to reach billion-dollar valuations. Science and engineering and data and analytics followed, with *** and *** projected unicorns, respectively, highlighting the broad range of sectors driving the next wave of high-value startups. Financial services, information technology, and artificial intelligence (AI) each also counted more than 100 emerging unicorns in early 2026.
