A unicorn company is a privately owned startup that has a current valuation of one billion U.S. dollars or over. Once a company has gone public (IPO) or has been acquired it is no longer termed as a unicorn.
As of 2025, the United States had the largest number of unicorns - privately held companies valued at * U.S. dollars or more. Among the most highly valued were OpenAI, SpaceX, and Anthropic, all of which ranked among the biggest unicorns globally by market valuation.
Unicorns made in China
Although China did not have the largest number of unicorns globally, it was home to some of the world’s most valuable ones. For example, ByteDance was valued at around *** billion U.S. dollars as of November 2025, making it not only China’s most valuable unicorn but also one of the highest-valued unicorns worldwide.
