The 1816 presidential election of the United States was the eighth in the country's history. It was contested by the Democratic-Republican Party's James Monroe, and the Federalist Party's Rufus King. This was the last time that the Federalist Party put forward a candidate for the presidential election. James Monroe emerged victorious, carrying 16 of 19 states, receiving 183 electoral votes, to King's 34. The previous administration received credit for ending the War of 1812 with Britain, and making progressive reforms that appealed to the Federalist voter base. Monroe was the third of four Democratic-Republican presidents, who occupied the White House from 1800 until 1828.
