Led by Giorgia Meloni, the right-wing party Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia – FdI) won the last Italian general election in 2022. Having the center-right coalition secured the majority of the seats in both Houses of the Parliament, she became the first female Prime Minister in the country’s history. The alliance advocated a more prominent role in foreign policy, contrast to illegal immigration, and reduction of taxes. While many predicted a democratic backsliding and international isolationism, the government’s rating in foreign policy remains relatively high. Even though the main opposition party regained support under a new female leadership, the PM’s premiership was confirmed in the 2024 European election, despite less than half of electors voting. In fact, abstentionism and disaffection are the major problems affecting Italian politics, alongside chronical political volatility due to unstable parliamentary majorities.
