In 2024, half of the Italians declared to trust the European Union. The attitude towards the EU has been very volatile in recent years. The lowest confidence was recorded in 2020, when two thirds of Italians disapproved of the Union, mostly because its support and intervention during the COVID-19 emergency in the country was considered weak and insufficient. However, the confidence raised to almost 70 percent in 2022, after successful negotiations about the post-pandemic recovery and the approval of the Next-Generation EU plan.
