What started as a humble kickstarter in New York has grown into a worldwide phenomenon. Indeed, Peloton has very rapidly become synonymous with home fitness and exercise. While the company's main product is a stationary exercise bike, it has also subsequently launched a state-of-the-art treadmill range as well as a rowing machine. These are all equipped with signature display monitors where customers can enjoy access to training classes and entertainment via a subscription from the comfort of their own homes.
Indeed, as with any successful company, the appeal of Peloton is broad, with the age breakdown of Peloton users relatively evenly split among the generations, with notably only the 18-24 category showing little interest in the product. However, if the company wants to recreate its golden years during the pandemic, it will have to keep these users coming back by offering new and exciting ways of staying fit at home.
Peloton's global takeover
The company originally retailed only in the United States, but has since expanded into Canada and parts of Europe. Despite this expansion, Peloton’s revenue generated in different regions of the world showed that sales in North America still constituted the largest share of the company’s profits. The company as a whole enjoyed positive growth in revenue during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which forced fitness fanatics into finding ways of staying in shape at home through various forms of home fitness regimes. As a result, Peloton’s annual revenue worldwide peaked in 2021, but this trend has since tapered off and the company’s yearly revenue declined since 2022. In the latest fiscal year, the company managed to stop the steep decline, with revenues in 2024 settling at around 2.7 billion U.S. dollars. However, one positive aspect for the fitness company is that annual subscription revenue continued to grow from year to year, reaching a new high of over 1.7 billion U.S. dollars in the 2024 fiscal year.Peloton's online offering
In fact, Peloton's online monthly subscription service plays an integral part in the company's business model, accounting for a share of over 60 percent of Peloton's revenue worldwide. This subscription service gives users access to remote fitness classes, often led by Peloton's celebrity instructors in categories such as strength, stretching, and cycling.
