Data center construction in the United States - statistics & facts
Private sector spending on data center construction in the United States reached 41.1 billion U.S. dollars in 2025, up from 1.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2014. That more than twentyfold increase reflects a sustained acceleration of investment driven by cloud computing expansion and, more recently, artificial intelligence (AI) demand. As of March 2026, annualized private construction spending had climbed to 49.5 billion U.S. dollars, with data centers now accounting for 45.7 percent of all private office construction put in place in the U.S., up from 12.8 percent in 2021.
