Federal elections in Canada 2025- Statistics & Facts
Canada is set to hold a snap federal election on April 28, 2025. Marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s political landscape, the election was called by the newly appointed Prime Minister Mark Carney, who succeeded Justin Trudeau in March. In Canada, federal elections determine the composition of the House of Commons, which is the lower house of Parliament. While elections are traditionally held every four years, they may be held sooner if the current government loses a vote of confidence, or in this instance, the Prime Minister calls an early election. Canada uses what is called a first-past-the-post electoral system. Each of the 343 electoral districts, also called ridings, elects one Member of Parliament, meaning that the candidate with the most votes in each riding wins, potentially allowing a party to form a majority government without the majority of the popular vote. The leader of the governing party becomes the Prime Minister.
