The United Kingdom is facing a perplexing situation in which trainees in general practice are having trouble finding jobs despite general practitioner (GP) shortages nationwide. As of December 2024, the average number of patients per GP practice in England has surpassed 10,000, marking a substantial increase from the 7,700 patients per practice recorded in December 2016. Coupled with rising patient complexity due to the aging population, this is exerting unprecedented pressure on GPs, which in turn puts their mental health at risk.
