Big tech companies dominate the digital economy and have a massive impact on the online and offline lives of billions. Google, Amazon, Meta, Apple, and Microsoft (also collectively known as GAMAM) usually account for the biggest share of whichever business segment or market they operate or compete in, making it harder for smaller or new players to get established and fairly compete for customers. Additionally, big tech companies have been frequently criticized for misusing user data and not doing enough to combat the spread of misinformation and illegal content. In recent years, the European Commission (EC) has proposed and adopted several pieces of regulations that aim at ensuring fair competition in the digital sector while also improving content and platform governance.
