Public debt in Italy - statistics & facts
For decades, Italy has consistently exceeded the 60 percent public debt to GDP limit prescribed by the EU. In response, the European Commission has requested severe austerity measures, especially since the 2011 Euro crisis. Italy’s government has recently prioritized debt reduction while safeguarding its ability to repay bonds, but high interest rates compound the issue by adding to existing debt. The challenge is reducing debt while avoiding spending cuts in crucial areas such as welfare and healthcare.
