In Italy, local governments comprise 20 regions, over 100 provinces, and almost 8,000 municipalities. The total gross debt of local administrations decreased from around 116 billion euros in 2010 to about 82 billion euros in 2024. Regions held the largest amount of the local government debt, with 37 billion euros.
