In 2025, the United States recorded its highest number of measles cases since 1991, with over 2,200 confirmed cases and three deaths, including two unvaccinated school-aged children in Texas. The disease still causes tens of thousands of deaths globally each year, but the U.S. had largely avoided major outbreaks since the CDC declared measles eliminated in 2000. Rising rates of vaccine hesitancy and misinformation now threaten that status, as cases have continued to surge into 2026.
