Household debt and loans in Europe - statistics & facts
Over the last few years, household debt has been decreasing in most major European countries. The value of household debt in the euro area as a share of disposable income dropped from its peak at 109.8 percent in early 2021 to under 97 percent in mid-2024. But that pattern could also be observed in other major countries outside the euro area. The debt-to-income ratio of UK households fell at a fast pace between 2022 and 2024, although it did not peak during the pandemic. Households mostly get indebted through loans such as mortgages, credit cards, car loans, or consumer loans.
